As high school graduation approached, I was unsure what I wanted to be when I grew up. I chose to attend Cottey College in Nevada, MO- a small, liberal arts women’s college- so I could get my required courses underway and take some time to decide. I received my Associates from Cottey and decided to continue my education at Eastern Michigan University to obtain a degree in teaching- just as my father had. It’s not uncommon for a child to follow in their parent’s footsteps- and I have, literally and figuratively. I walked the exact same path from a relative’s house in Ypsilanti as he did to get to and from campus.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Science and my teaching certificate, I headed out to find a job. Unfortunately, the teaching market in Michigan was saturated with teachers and jobs were hard to come by. I could have sought employment in another state, as many of my colleagues were, but life got in the way, as it often can. I was going through a divorce and could not leave the state- nor did I want to. I needed to be near my family in the difficult time I was experiencing- a difficult time that prompted my thinking about law school and becoming an attorney myself, and again follow in my father’s footsteps.
Deciding to go back to school was not an easy decision, but with the help and support of family and friends, I achieved my goal and graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in May 2009, and passed the bar exam later that same year. I have been blessed with the opportunity of joining my father in his practice, as well as venturing out into areas he was not able to do because of his teaching career. I have represented individuals as a court-appointed attorney in the Livingston County Probate Court, as well as represented individuals in divorce proceedings. I have completed an extensive training course for bankruptcy attorneys to allow me to represent individuals in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings. I feel that my experience, both legal and personal, allows me to counsel my client, as well as address their legal needs.
For more than 30 years my father has built a practice with his skill and reputation. It is my ambition to continue to grow the practice, but still keep the personal touch he has achieved all these years. Clients are not customers- they are people seeking help and advice in very personal and sometimes painful situations, and deserve to be treated as such and have those needs addressed with compassion and professionalism.
